Tangled Fibers
Pacific Northwest Quilt & Textile Arts Museum
Exhibition Dates: July - September 2022
This group exhibition was unique for us. After three themed shows, we each wanted to be less constrained and free to explore and create. We had confidence that a theme or at least some cohesiveness would emerge. In January of 2022, we toured each other's studios to see the breadth of work that was being prepared for the show. The result was a big sigh of relief. Not only did we have enough work for the show, but there were clear clusters of work that would look great together. We knew the third-floor space of the museum well, so we could imagine the flow of color, texture, and subject matter.
Although we sometimes work abstractly, many of our pieces reflected the natural world. We all still celebrate the ocean, forest, and creatures all around us. With the freedom we granted each other, we all stretched into new ways of working - new mediums and fresh inspiration. Jean-Marie pushed her work with paper and tea-bags, to create new shapes reflecting nature and her imagination. Cathie stretched her experience in dyeing back to the loom, exploring ikat, dyeing warp and weft threads before weaving. Pat went BIG, creating fabulous winged birds. Barbara zoomed in on microscopic cells for inspiration for a couple of her amazing quilts.
